Mullvad takes the most uncompromising approach to anonymity in the consumer VPN market. There is no email signup — you get a random 16-digit account number and nothing else ties the service to your identity. The price is a flat €5/month with no tiers, no discounts, and no renewal hikes, unchanged since 2009. It is a deliberately minimal, engineering-led product rather than a marketing-driven one, and for the right user that is exactly the appeal.
Anonymity as architecture
Most VPNs ask for an email and a password. Mullvad does not. When you sign up, the system generates a random 16-digit account number, and that number is your only credential. There is no name, no email, no password, and crucially no way for Mullvad to link your usage to an identity — even if compelled.
You can take this further with payment. Alongside cards and PayPal, Mullvad accepts cryptocurrency and even cash mailed in an envelope, which leaves no banking trail at all. The whole design is built so that the company simply does not hold data that could be handed over.
This is not theoretical. In 2023, Swedish police arrived at Mullvad's office with a search warrant and left empty-handed, because there was no user data to seize. That real-world event validated the no-logs architecture more convincingly than any audit could.
Transparency & audits
Mullvad's client apps are open-source, and the company has commissioned independent audits repeatedly — Cure53 has assessed it multiple times since 2018, with further reports from Assured AB in more recent years. Critically, Mullvad publishes the full reports including findings, then acknowledges and fixes the issues, rather than summarizing a clean result in a press release.
There is an external vote of confidence too: the Mozilla Foundation runs its own Mozilla VPN on Mullvad's infrastructure. That is a meaningful endorsement from an organization that stakes its reputation on privacy.
On jurisdiction, Sweden is not part of the Five Eyes but is a member of the broader Fourteen Eyes arrangement. For most users this is perfectly acceptable; for those seeking the absolute strictest jurisdiction it is a point worth weighing against the rest of the package.
Where it falls short
Mullvad's minimalism has a cost. The server network is small — roughly 700 servers across 40-plus countries, against the thousands offered by NordVPN or ExpressVPN. For most people connecting to a nearby server this is irrelevant, but it matters if you need servers in specific smaller regions.
Streaming is the clearest weakness. Mullvad does not optimize for it and will often fail to unblock Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and similar services. This is a deliberate design choice, not a bug — but if streaming is your main reason for a VPN, look elsewhere.
Support is email-only, with no live chat, and the feature set is intentionally lean. Mullvad also retired OpenVPN in early 2026 to focus solely on WireGuard, which simplifies the apps but removes a fallback some users relied on.

Verdict
Mullvad is the clearest expression of privacy-first design in the VPN market. The anonymous account model, flat honest pricing, published audits, and a real-world police raid that found nothing combine into a trust story no competitor quite replicates. You give up streaming reliability, a large server network, and convenience features to get it. If anonymity and transparency are what you came for, Mullvad is close to ideal; if you want an all-rounder that also unblocks Netflix, it is the wrong tool by design.
